All good things come to an end. Sadly, today is the end of the London Cyclist Blog. I started the blog in 2007 because I was frustrated with the lack of information online for daily cyclists like me. To my surprise, the blog reached over 136,000 visitors per month.
I found myself blogging up to 5 times a week, reviewing the latest cycling gear, speaking to TfL and politicians and meeting the London cycling community. I’ve had the chance to lend my voice to important issues such as the call for safe infrastructure for cyclists in London.
To keep the site going and support myself, I’ve been working on some really fun projects including the London Cyclist eShop, the bike maintenance course and the London Cyclist apps. It was weird introducing myself as a full-time “blogger” and my mom kept asking me when I would get a real job.
My fondest memories are of working on the London Cycle Routes e-book. I woke up, grabbed my bike and my camera and set off to explore a new part of London. Exhausted in the evening, I took my notes and did the same thing again the next day. At the time of the e-book’s publication, there hadn’t been a new guide to cycle routes in London for years. It sold over 2,500 copies. I want others to experience this amazing feeling, which is why today I’m making the eBook available for free.
When my app company Nibble Apps started demanding more of my time, I sought out talented writers with a passion for cycling to keep London Cyclist running. Emily joined the group for a year and contributed hundreds of posts. This was followed by a number of part-time writers, who each added their unique voice to London Cyclist.
These days, in the world of influencers, YouTubers and podcasts, the London Cyclist Blog seems rather quaint. Although the Internet can sometimes seem like a big, bad place, I was lucky to be part of this little corner full of friendly people, united by a common love of cycling.
I am extremely grateful to everyone who has read, commented, shared and supported the blog over the past 12 years. I will keep the door open to relaunching London Cyclist in the future, but for now I will not be posting any more updates.
And then?
- LondonCyclist.co.uk will remain online and blog articles remain accessible.
- The London Cyclist eBook is now available for free. Please share it with any friends who might appreciate it.
- The London Cyclist bike maintenance course is now available for free. Again, share it widely.
- I moved the Bike Doctor app to my company’s Nibble Apps. I will update the app for the latest Apple devices.
- I will no longer be distributing the weekly London Cyclist newsletter.
