THE Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds 3.0 Shell Jacket is no stranger to praise from outdoor enthusiasts, and after putting it to the test, it’s clear why. This technical shell combines performance, durability and thoughtful design for those who venture into the mountains for climbing, hiking or skiing.
First impressions and key features
Waterproofing and breathability
Helly Hansen 3-layer fabric technology really shines here, with the Odin 9 Worlds offering rugged waterproofing and excellent breathability. During extended field testing, in pouring rain and variable mountain weather conditions, this shell kept my bones dry. The water-repellent coating beaded water effortlessly, while the Helly Tech Professional membrane was breathable and helped wick away moisture during high-output activities, crucial to avoiding the dreaded sauna effect as you approach the base of the rise or rise.
Unfailing durability
Built to survive harsh conditions, the Odin 9 Worlds Shell Jacket has a reputation for being as tough as nails. From mountain runs to winter mountaineering, the jacket’s reinforced seams and abrasion-resistant material have stood up to abuse. It’s the kind of outerwear I’ve previously called “The Mothership”, ideal for climbers, mountaineers and anyone with a penchant for rough terrain. Based on previous testing, I’d place the jacket firmly in the same category as the Arc’teryx Alpha SV and, more recently, the Patagonia Triolet, two hardcore shell jackets for serious adventures. The Odin 9 Worlds Shell Jacket is cheaper with equally good features.
Versatile mountain design
One of the jacket’s standout features is its possibility of adjustment. The hood is helmet compatible and fits snugly, while the hem and cuffs adjust easily to block wind and snow. Ample storage in the form of well-placed pockets allows easy access to snacks, maps or gloves without having to stop and rummage through your bag, a boon on long, exposed routes. The harness-friendly hand pockets are huge, big enough for a laminated operating system map and more; I liked the little extra interior pocket to put my glasses. The pockets have two-way zippers, which I thought was unnecessary. All pocket and underarm zippers feature glove-friendly pulls and YKK Aqua Coil zippers to help keep the kit dry.
Generous fit with full range of motion when the terrain gets steep and technical.
Comfort for complete freedom of movement
When you’re searching for the next hold or adjusting your position on precarious terrain, the last thing you want is a jacket that restricts movement. Luckily, Helly Hansen has mastered ergonomic fit with articulated sleeves and underarm gussets that allow complete freedom of movement. Even with layers underneath, the Odin 9 Worlds doesn’t feel restrictive: a must-have for technical climbing and skiing.
The helmet-friendly hood works well for mountaineering and hiking; it is fully adjustable and has a RECCO reflector integrated into the stiffened visor. Very useful and not just for snow sports, as many rescue professionals use RECCO technology to help locate injured people. Remember, however, that the RECCO reflector does not broadcast your position like a personal beacon does!
Style meets function
Although form follows function in the outside world, the Odin 9 Worlds makes no compromises on appearance. Clean lines and a modern silhouette mean this jacket won’t look out of place as you move from the mountains to the city. This is a technical shell that still feels at home on the street, perfect for those looking for style and functionality. The good sized zippered chest pocket will fit many larger phone styles.
The side pockets were perfect for wearing with a climbing harness. The hood is fully adjustable when wearing a helmet.
Field performance testing
We tested Odin 9 worlds in a variety of conditions, from deluges in Scotland to high-altitude snowstorms in the Alps:
- Under heavy rain: The watertightness of the hull was impeccable. Prolonged exposure to torrential rain left us dry, with no leaking zippers or seams. The DWR coating prevents the fabric from soaking in, while the membrane ensures moisture evacuation, thus preserving comfort.
- In strong wind: Preparing for biting alpine gusts, the jacket proved its windproof qualities. The hood’s adjustments worked wonderfully to block the wind, while the cuffs and hem kept drafts from seeping in.
- In the snow: The Odin 9 Worlds will easily handle fresh snow, removing it from the surface while retaining warmth. The sturdy fabric also keeps wet snow out – great news for those hitting the slopes or tackling a summit in winter – especially on those spray-strewn Scottish winter climbs.
- During high-performance activities: When you’re pushing hard on climbs, breathability is essential, and this shell excelled. Even on fast, sweaty climbs, the jacket is well ventilated and moisture does not accumulate inside.
Areas of improvement
As good as it is, Odin Worlds 9 is not without potential drawbacks:
- Weight: Weighing slightly heavier than some ultralight shells, it might not appeal to fast, lightweight mountaineers looking to reduce their grams. However, for those who prioritize durability and weather protection, the trade-off is probably worth it.
- Price: As a high-end kit, the Odin 9 Worlds comes with a premium price tag. The quality, performance, and longevity justify the investment for serious users, but it’s a commitment for those on a tighter budget.
Final Thoughts
The Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds Shell Jacket is a top choice for those who demand serious protection and durability from their gear. Whether battling harsh mountain conditions or dealing with unpredictable weather on multi-day hikes, it delivers where it counts. While its weight and price may give ultralight purists pause, the jacket’s overall performance, adaptability, and comfort make it a reliable companion for serious outdoor activities.
If you’re looking for a tough, technical shell that can handle whatever the mountain throws at you, the Odin 9 Worlds is well worth the investment.
