You train regularly, eat a balanced diet and get enough sleep – but as the nights are still cold and dark, you struggle to maintain your motivation – does this speak to you? If you often feel like the weather can often impact your motivation after remaining fairly constant throughout the year (it’s easier said than done!) then this article is for you!
Here are some ways to help you feel motivated during these incredibly cold days!
Remember why you started – Write down the benefits of keeping your movement levels high in winter and highlight those that are most meaningful to you. This may include improved mood (due to endorphins, which can help manage stress) and better sleep (leading to better energy levels) or a noticeable increase in strength !
Every step counts! – There are many simple adjustments you can make to increase your NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) – the energy you expend during normal daily activities such as standing and running errands. If your job requires you to sit at a desk for long periods of time, try getting up for a few minutes every hour for a simple stretch, a few star jumps if you’re feeling more energetic (!). Another simple change is to use the stairs instead of an elevator when you’re out and about, or choose to walk instead of taking the bus or car!
Plan ahead! – Plan what form of activity you are going to do, when you are going to do it and decide how much time you would like to spend on it too. A good tip is to involve a friend to make it fun and to keep them accountable! If you’ve felt like exercise was a chore in the past, think about what you ENJOY, not what you think you should do. It could be a Zumba class, kickboxing or just a simple walk in nature!
Dress for the weather – During the colder season, you will also have to think about dressing because nothing beats a winter walk in the fresh air; Whether it’s on your lunch break or with friends on the weekend, walking is one of the best things you can do for your health.
Exercising at home – If you have free space, a mini home gym (or in my case, a living room with a workout mat, dumbbells and kettlebell!) can transform your fitness during the winter – simply because it’s right there, and you don’t have it. No need to train for hours a day to feel the benefits of an energy boost after just 10 minutes!
Have fun ! – Winter means there are fun activities you can do with your friends or family like ice skating, hockey, or indoor skiing! But if you feel like it’s too cold for you, there are plenty of fun workouts on Youtube that you can also do as a family.
Finish up and enjoy exercising during the winter months while enjoying healthy (and soulful!) food – we don’t need to follow the clichés and start a whole new exercise routine. exercise in January! Remember to move in a way that makes YOU feel good!
