If you’re like most people, a common starting point for losing weight looks like this…
“It’s true, I’m tired of feeling, my jeans are too tight, I’m letting myself down, I want to start feeling better, feeling good every day SO I have to do something with this weight, it went too far. »
Sound familiar?
Then you dive straight into apps, weight loss clubs, diet books, and buy new home gym equipment. You’re racing full speed ahead for a few weeks, but the scale shows no signs of progress or life gets in the way.
You find yourself too busy, stressed, hungry and tired. You give up. And then you feel worse. This way you can enjoy your favorite drinks and snacks straight away.
A few weeks pass and you are further behind than at the beginning!
It frustrates me how predictable this is. And believe me, I’ve been around this loop many times myself.
BUT there is another way. And it’s not about another new diet or eating only “green” things on Wednesday! It’s a question of logic and state of mind
When it comes to food and weight loss, our logic seems to be thrown out the window. If we were faced with a similar challenge at work, or in just about any other area of our lives, we would be calm, logical, and move forward.
So how about we do the same thing with our weight?
Imagine if you cut your leg and blood came pouring out. Is your first thought that you need to amputate? No, of course not. You apply pressure, clean the cut and stick a bandage on it. You don’t overreact and then regret.
My point is this: with weight loss, which is admittedly a difficult problem to solve, we immediately take a hammer.
We are taking drastic measures too quickly. We change everything overnight, we set crazy goals and very different ways of living, and then we wonder why we fail.
With weight loss, most people, myself included, make it much harder than it needs to be.
Here’s another way to try.
Break it down
Try to divide your weight loss into different phases.
My suggested phases are:
- Stop gaining weight
- Maintain weight
- Lose weight
Can you see how most weight loss plans forget the first two and go straight to the third? It’s too extreme.
The reason we often skip to step 3 is unfortunately because weight loss is big business. App makers, book publishers, gyms, weight loss clubs, and meal box companies can’t really sell us 1 or 2, but boy, can they sell us the step 3.
And they sell hard.
Here’s the bad (and slightly sad) news. The weight loss industry ideal situation is for you to lose a lot of weight quickly (using the new “thing” they are marketing). Then you get bored or frustrated, stop, gradually gain weight again, then come back in a year and start the process again, wanting the next “new” system.
And that’s what many of us do. I did it. But we don’t have to.
The first key step is VITAL and easier than you think.
The starting point for moving toward a healthy weight (and staying there forever) is to stop gaining weight. Nothing less, nothing more.
