I hate food waste, don’t you? I’m pretty good at using up the odds and ends I have lying around in the fridge, but inevitably there will be some food waste. And it’s even more likely for those of you with large families and busy lives. I’m probably luckier than most in that I have a hot composter in the garden, but despite this, that food collection bin under the sink is still a bone of contention. Let’s be honest, it can be gross and smelly, right? The good news is that there is now an effective solution to combat household food waste.
I was really excited to receive an email telling me about Lomi, an innovative kitchen countertop food recycler. Not only will Lomi stop messes and odors, it will effortlessly transform 30-50 gallons of food waste, including fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy and even compostable packaging, into a nutrient-rich natural fertilizer called Lomi Earth, which is about 200 grams of coffee-like powder. which can either be put in a green garden bin, a normal bin (reducing odors, flies and smells) or, better yet, used as fertilizer for plants.
The Lomi solution for treating household waste is simple and ecological. At the touch of a button, Lomi silently converts your food waste in just 24 hours, using less energy than leading fridge freezers.
As well as providing an excellent solution to combat food waste, Lomi is carbon neutral on delivery with 100% of its manufacturing emissions offset.
And by diverting 100 kg of food waste from landfills and avoiding 8 kg of methane emissions every 100 cycles, Lomi is the only household appliance with a net positive impact on the environment.
If you love food but hate waste, Lomi is the ideal solution for food waste at home. But let’s get back to the basics. Where possible, we must reduce food waste. Just because we have an effective solution for dealing with waste doesn’t mean we should stop thinking about waste reduction first. And we probably all know the following, but a reminder never hurts. After all, 60% of food waste in the UK comes from our homes, a shocking statistic!
So, here are some tips that will not only help you reduce food waste, but also save money!
- Avoid impulse purchases by planning your meals for the week and only buying the ingredients you need.
- Store food properly. You may also consider reducing your refrigerator temperature to 3 degrees. The added cost and energy consumption is far outweighed by preventing food from spoiling so quickly. Remember that many foods purchased fresh can be frozen to extend their shelf life.
- Understand the difference between “best before” and “best before”. In the latter case, smell and taste are always reliable indicators whether the food is still safe to eat.
- Bread is one of the most wasted products in our trash. Check out our recipes for stale bread and prepare slices to use as breadcrumbs and store in the freezer. If you buy several loaves at a time, keep the others in the freezer and then take out only what you need.
- Be wary of special offers on perishable goods. It’s not a good deal if you end up throwing half of it away!
In conclusion, take steps to reduce your food waste as much as possible. But if you are looking for a viable solution to deal with leftover household food waste. Lomi might just be your best friend!
