Nutrition and Hydration Week
This week highlights the importance of good nutrition and hydration and their impact on your mind and body.
In order to stay healthy, you must eat a healthy and balanced diet. Everything you eat will impact your physical and mental health.
Eating well helps prevent:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Certain cancers
- Weight maintenance
- Heart health complications
No single food or nutrient will provide you with everything your body needs, which is why it is vitally important to eat a varied diet from each of the food groups.
The Eatwell Guide lets you see at a glance how much your body needs and from which food group. (click to enlarge)
Good hydration prevents:
- Kidney stones
- Skin conditions
- Constipation
- Headaches
- Urinary tract infections
- Poor general health
How much should I drink to ensure adequate hydration and how can I easily achieve this?
- Try to drink between 1.5 L and 2 L of water each day, more if you exercise, have a labor-intensive job or are exposed to high temperatures.
- Drink a glass of water when you wake up
- Drink water before, during and after exercise
- When you’re hungry, drink a glass of water first
- Drink a glass of water with each meal
- Add fresh citrus slices to every glass of water to avoid boredom
- Keep a water bottle with you when you’re on the go to ensure you consume water little and often
