When I tell people I meet that I’m a life coach, one of the first frequently asked questions is (in layman’s terms): What gives you the power to tell people how they should live their lives? And when someone doesn’t know what life coaching is, that’s totally fair.
The assumption and belief of those asking this question is that the role of a life coach is to tell people how to live life correctly and that we (we life coaches) think we know it all. This couldn’t be further from reality. truth!
The key principle that good life coaches understand is that there is no right or wrong. The job of a life coach is actually to help each individual find their own “right” path, and what makes it “right” is that it must be theirs way – the way of truth and integrity. A good life coach will help their client become aware of their blind spots, limiting beliefs and behaviors, and bring out and exploit their unique strengths and gifts. A good life coach will help their client fully embody and express their authentic truth, connecting them to their values and purpose and what makes them come alive. Everyone is unique and understands life in their own way and a life coach should always remain very curious and never make assumptions or diagnoses – but ask questions, closely observe and clarify what resonates most with their client.
A good life coach will always continue to work on themselves. I am constantly evolving and learning. In addition to my CTI certification, last year I completed Shirzad Chamine’s “Positive Intelligence” coaching program, which allows me to understand my own sabotaging behavior and that of my clients on a deeper psychological level, strengthening thus the ability to replace them with behaviors that correspond to authentic behaviors. truth and higher self-realization.
“I know that I know nothing” (to borrow from Socrates) and I know that my path is not “the path» – it just works for me. And that’s really the main thing. The only “right path” for you – is yours – and the more you give yourself permission, love and acceptance to follow your own intuition and inner knowing, the more freedom you will find.
