When I started running many years ago, I didn’t have a sports bra. It’s not because sports bras hadn’t yet been invented but because I didn’t know any better. I’m not even sure I knew sports bras existed. Bras were bras, right?
Well, yes, but also no.
Actually, no.
A sports or running bra is vitally important when doing high impact sports like running or anything else high impact that I can’t think of right now (sorry, brain of menopause comes into play).
Tip: Don’t wear two regular bras instead of one.
When I first started running, I wore two normal bras – one on top of the other – to prevent any wobble. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t work and I didn’t even have much to wobble about.
So after a while I decided to get a “real” running bra and oh my god it was so much better. Everything (and when I say “everything,” I of course mean “my boobs”) stayed in place and running was much more comfortable. I would have even felt like a real runner if I hadn’t already been wearing a normal cotton t-shirt, thick tracksuit bottoms and trainers that cost £10 from a cheap shoe store in town.
Yet underneath I looked like a real runner, hell yeah.
Sports bras designed for high-impact sports like running not only provide comfort, there are also health implications to consider if you run in something that isn’t up to the task (or nothing at all. Don’t do this).
Breasts are of course made up of fragile tissues and ligaments and so if you run without a high impact sports bra, these tissues and ligaments will be stretched and damaged. That’s why wearing a support bra designed for high-impact sports like running is absolutely essential to your comfort and health.
So, remember kids: two bras are not better than one!
