Hike to Much Dal Pan
It was the first hike of this vacation and we decided to aim for something easy, perfect for warming up. We heard about this route and it was definitely the best choice. The circuit is absolutely breathtaking. It’s an easy hike and definitely a busy one, for that reason, but I can still say it’s worth doing.
All along the way you are surrounded by majestic landscapes and if you are lucky enough to enjoy a sunny day you will be able to admire the whole way. Marmolada Glacier on this panoramic trail.
From Passo Pardoi (huge free parking) we followed path 601 towards Rifugio Viel dal Pan. For non-Italian speakers – Lots of dal pan translates to “Path of Bread”. This was the old shortcut used by flour merchants.
The hike is easy and to escape the multitude of people we covered the sections that allowed it. You climb about 500 m at the start of the hike, in the first two kilometers then you more or less maintain the altitude. It’s totally relaxing and carefree.
After the first chalet – Rifugio Baita Fredarola, we continue to admire Lake Fedaia below and the mighty Marmolada Glacier to our right. This path is so impressive.
The next short stop is the Rifugio Viel dal Pan. This one is significantly busier than the first, so take that into account if you plan to eat during the hike.
The highlight and highlight of the hike is the Rifugio Luigi Groza. The place is divine. 360 degree panoramic view. The seating area is so welcoming that only the cold wind barely manages to delay your hike. This is a place to stop at least for a coffee.
What is very interesting about this hike is that it is a circuit around the ridge of the mountain, which allows you to see the landscape from all angles. We descended directly from Rifugio Luigi Groza following trail 680. This crosses the Sella Ronda circuit several times. This is another attraction of the Dolomites: in winter you can do the tour on skis and in the warm season by mountain bike. Around 40 km for skiing and 60 kg for mountain biking which passes over three passes, four valleys and three provinces.
But back to our route, the descent was very different. Lush vegetation, a narrow path and a lovely view towards the other side of the mountain.
It must be said that this day exceeded our expectations, that’s for sure. If you’re in the area and looking for a nice, relaxing hike, make sure you don’t miss this one. And keep in mind that our photos may be pretty but they are nothing compared to reality.

How to get a lot of Dal Pan?
From Canzei, head towards Passo Pardoi on the SS48. There is also a huge car park, so an excellent logistical asset.
Where to sleep?
For this particular itinerary we stayed Canazeï has Camping Marmolada. It is an excellent base camp for many routes in the region. The campsite is located in the middle of the town, so shops are within walking distance. Another good thing is that there is a covered area where you can eat your own food and of course all the other usual facilities that are usually found in campsites. At the opposite pole, be aware that there can be a little noise and also a few too many people. The price of accommodation may differ depending on the time of year – but you can generally calculate it at around 25-35 euros/night for 2 people, a small car and a small tent. Other than that, everything is fine.
